From completely wild Alaskan territory less than a century ago to charming, modern-day small towns, the Eagle River and Chugiak areas of Anchorage, Alaska began their growth extremely slowly with completion of the Alaskan railroad in 1923. In fact, local expansion gained little momentum until World War II with the construction of Fort Richardson between Anchorage and Eagle River in the early 1940’s. During and after World War II, military personnel and civilians (primarily working on military construction) began building up these communities and coming to appreciate the natural beauty, abundant resources and overall quality of life offered in Eagle River and Chugiak. Today, enthusiasts of the outdoor lifestyle thrive here with activities from cross country and downhill skiing to Scottish highland games and the honor of hosting the first checkpoint on the historic and international Iditarod dog sled race. The roughly 22,000 and 7,000 residents of Eagle River and Chugiak respectively, have come to enjoy the appealing, small town qualities of these communities coupled with convenient proximity to all the resources of Anchorage only 10 miles away.

Shopping and Dining
A shopping and dining hub for the surrounding area, Eagle River has Safeway, Wal-Mart and Fred-Meyer stores to meet grocery and home goods needs as well as Valley Home Center Hardware for home-improvement and repair necessities. A few local shops include Hi-Lites Candles and Gifts, Dance Duds, Artworks Gallery-Glass Studio and Game Exchange. It is also home to a The Pizza Man (voted best Pizza in Anchorage), Haute Quarter Grill, Jalapenos fine Mexican and Italian/ Greek, the Burrito Factory Café. Chepo’s authentic Mexican, Garcia’s, Chinese buffets, Sushi bars, Thai food and Fast food favorites McDonalds, Arby’s, Pizza hut, Carl’s JR. and multiple coffee stand can be found in the “downtown” Eagle River area. Don’t skip breakfast in Chugiak / Eagle River. You’ll need plenty of energy to spend your day roaming the many parks and pathways of the area. Parks and Recreation
The Eagle River/Chugiak Parks and Recreation manages 13 undeveloped and 16 developed properties totaling over 2,500 acres of park land. Activities from hiking and cross country skiing to horseback riding, archery, ice-skating, hockey and swimming are all sponsored by the parks system. Loretta French park has added five baseball fields to its offerings and the local Pop Warner Football League has made Eagle River Lions Park its permanent home. Summer day camp through parks system runs 10 weeks and serves more than 800 children. More than just park space, activity centers such as the Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center, the Chugiak Pool and the Beach Lake Ski Chalet also contribute to the parks and recreation offerings, not to mention the local trail system. The Rondak Nature Trail, the Albert Loop Trail, the Dew Mound Trail and the Historic Iditarod / Crow Pass Trail all begin behind the Eagle River Nature Center which used to be the visitor center for Chugach State Park. From a relaxed, ¾ mile educational stroll to a rigorous (but stunning) 25 mile trek, each trail offers something different to residents and visitors looking to get deeper into nature. In addition to the trails, the Nature Center itself manages a campground, an instructional classroom and cabins for residential center volunteers.

Living
For those looking to relocate to Eagle River / Chugiak, there are just so many reasons and ways to fall in love with the Alaska lifestyle. So many regional gatherings take place here including the annual Bear Paw Festival and the area’s Fourth of July celebration. In the summer time, the Alaska Scottish Club holds its annual highland games in Eagle River Lions Park and tickets to the event are quite affordable. Through the winter and much of the spring and fall as well, a 15 minute drive from Eagle River will bring you to the exciting downhill ski park Alpenglow So many one-of-a-kind experiences here don’t cost a thing. Spend a day viewing area waterfalls such as Thunderbird and South Fork Falls or drive up to Eklutna Village Historical Park and visit St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, estimated to date back to 1830 making it the oldest structure in the greater Anchorage area. In addition to the appealing existing real estate listings in Eagle River / Chugiak, new subdivisions are currently in the planning stages in this area to cater to its expanding population, just one more positive factor setting these towns apart from the majority of the U.S.

Schools, Health, Transportation
Public and home schooling are both popular in Eagle River and Chugiak. The Anchorage School District oversees 12 public schools in the area, eight elementary, two middle and two high schools. In addition, the University of Alaska offers a Chugiak-Eagle River Campus on Eagle River Road. A Bible College, Birchwood Christian School, Sheldon Jackson Camp Singing Hills and Boy Scout Camp Carlquist round out the areas’ educational resources. A number of medical, physical therapy and emergency care clinics including The Heart of Eagle River Medical Clinic PC, Eagle River Primary Care Clinic and Mat-Su Regional Medical Plaza provide preventative, ongoing and first response medical care to area residents while Providence Alaska Medical Center and Alaska Regional Hospital, both less than ½ hour away in Anchorage, provide hospital care to the region. The only real way to educate yourself about the Eagle River area and its homes for sale is to visit Anchorage and take the short drive north into this best-of-both-worlds destination.
