Living
Imagine your life in South Fork. Literally surrounded by Chugach State Park, the view out of every window in your home is a breathtaking panorama of the valley and to the north, from some locations, a splendid view of McKinley (Denali). Buffered from city life, but close enough to Eagle River and Anchorage, how you spend your days will be entirely up to you. Many Joint Base Elmendorf AFB / Ft. Richardson personnel enjoy the less than 20 minute commute to the base from Hiland Road, but the truth is the South Fork / Hiland Road area appeals to a broad spectrum of military and civilian individuals, families and retirees. After all, who wouldn’t want an almost-half-million-acre state park for a back yard?
Schools, Health, Transportation

Currently Homestead elementary, Gruening middle school and Eagle River high are served by bus service to mile 8 of Hiland road. Home schooling is also popular across this region, and the nearby town of Chugiak is also home to Birchwood Christian School. Emergency and preventative care are available in Eagle River as well, with full service hospitals such as Providence Alaska Medical Center about a half hour away in Anchorage. That’s the appealing and irresistible double standard of life here. Demand whatever you need from the world (within a half hour’s drive) 24 / 7, but be available to the world only when you choose to be. Like the fish in Alaska's waters, you’ll choose when to surface and when to disappear.
